WORLD RHINOPLASTY DAY
VIRTUAL WEBCAST

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED AT WORLD RHINOPLASTY DAY 2020
The first World Rhinoplasty Day (WRD), organised by SORSSA (Society of Rhinoplasty Surgeons of South Africa) and lead by Dr Cameron McIntosh, was held on 20 November 2020. This 24 hour meeting was held virtually due to the COVID pandemic safety restrictions. The event brought together 140 key experts from over 40 nations in the field of functional and aesthetic rhinoplasty to share ideas and experiences and to discuss novel trends. The topics reflected the complexity of rhinoplasty, addressing multiple pre- and perioperative features that have a significant impact on the outcome of rhinoplasty results. A wide range of new or modified surgical techniques was discussed and demonstrated by use of illustrative videos.
There was an unpresented surge in webinars during the COVID pandemic, and SORSSA was one of the earliest societies to adapt to this new teaching platform. There was now the opportunity to provide world-class rhinoplasty education, which had historically been prohibitive due to travel and registration costs, for less developed countries.
Dr McIntosh floated the idea with his executive and highly recognised world leaders and the concept soon became a reality. An affordable, continuous 24-hour webinar would be organised in an ‘Olympic Games’ fashion whereby international societies, regions and nations would be given carte blanche to fill their prescribed time slot with pre-recorded presentations of their choice. In between each allocated slot the webinar would return to the live TV studio in Cape Town, South Africa where members of the SORSSA executive would moderate the change-over between sessions.
